Introduction to the rotary broaching

The rotary broaching operation is a simple, fast, and economical method for machining polygonal shapes (square, hexagonal, hexa lobular, fluted...) both internally (blind or through) and externally, on parts made of a wide range of materials.

The operating principle is simple. The axis of the cutting tool is offset on a 1Љ angle from the axis of rotation of the workpiece, as well as with respect to the axis of the broaching head shank.

This offset causes the broach to rotate by executing an oscillatory movement that causes progressive shearing as it slides into the workpiece.

This pendulum movement faithfully reproduces in the workpiece the profile of the cutting tool used.

It is necessary for the broach to have an undercut angle of 1.5º so that it cuts only a small part of the section of the profile.
If the angle is equal to or less than 1°, the tool will not cut correctly, resulting in poor-quality machining.
If, on the other hand, the angle is greater than 1.5°, the brittleness of the tool is increased.
